1. “Intersectionality,” “Ideology,” and “Social Construction of Gender” are key concepts in both Women’s Studies as a discipline and feminism in theory and practice. For that reason, they manifest not only in consciously feminist art and culture, but also in art and culture produced by women. So here’s what I want you to demonstrate in this essay:
• That you understand the concepts (for definitions, review chapters 1, 2, and 3 in Women’s Voices/Feminist Visions).
• That you can identify them when they manifest in artistic and cultural production (your discussion might include the artist herself, the artistic/cultural product, and audience reception (spectatorship).
• That you can use these concepts to argue cogently for the social and political significance of the following artists and/or artistic events: Faith Ringold (as presented by the National Museum of Women in the Arts), Night Watcher (Charlayne Woodard), I’ma Be Me (Wanda Sykes) Pitching the Tent (Tia Nina), and America the Beautiful (Nao Bustamante).
Essay 1 should be 7-8 pages in length and will be evaluated on:
Content (quality and completeness of argument) 25 points
Use of supporting evidence 15 points
