THE MOVIES AND HAVE A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF CINEMA, SOUND AND CINEMATOGRAPHY.

1. The German occupation of France, 1940-44, was a national trauma that France is still trying to come to terms with some 60 years later. Discuss the attitude of the main protagonists in two or three of the films we have viewed: the schoolboy Julien in Au revoir les enfants, Mr. Klein in the film by the same name, and M. Gerbier in Army of Shadows. You should integrate Metz’s comments on the process of filmic identification and show how these films might encourage today’s French citizens to work through some of the issues that faced their countrymen during the occupation. Take ONE SCENE from one of the films and explain how viewer identification works in the scene (be specific about shots such as eyeline matches and close-ups and camera movement, if any; and don’t forget sound!).

2. Discuss Melville’s film Army of Shadows and Vercors’ story The Silence of the Sea and show how they relate to the history of the French resistance during the German occupation of France, 1940-44. What do sound and image add to literary description? How do point of view and identification work in film/literature? You should make specific references to Ousby’s account of the French resistance and the historical introduction to the Vercors story, and the way that the film and the story might contribute to France’s continuing project of coming to terms with the trauma of the German occupation. Take ONE SCENE from the film and discuss it in depth: cinematography, editing, sound
