Assignment Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to apply what you have been reading throughout the course in the analysis of the interactions between a group of individuals conducting a mock IEP meeting (one of the most common opportunities for collaboration in schools).

Deliverable

You are to write a brief, maximum 2-3, page paper analyzing the interactions and dynamics occurring within the assigned video. Each of the graded components can be viewed in more detail in the Video Analysis Assignment Scoring Grid below.

Activity Details

Please complete the following tasks:

Step 1: Review the video: The IEP Process, Chapter 5: The IEP Meeting, which can be retrieved fromhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok0irMNfKmY

Step 2: Analyze the video interactions of the mock IEP meeting using the following guidelines based on your readings throughout the course:
-Discuss at least 3 specific verbal and non-verbal strategies that specific team members employed to communicate effectively with others within the team?
-Do you feel that this team collaborated effectively?
-Describe at least 3 actions by individuals that may have hindered collaboration, and what the individual could have done differently to improve collaboration.
-Evaluate the social power dynamics within this team. Who was the leader and important members of the team based on your observations (not just their role)?
– Discuss 2 specific strategies of social influence that team members used to try to get their point heard and accepted (e.g. expert power, social referent power, etc.)?
-Was this team accepting of diversity? How did you know (cite specific evidence supporting your claims)?
-Based on the conversations and collaboration of this team, do you think that the student is ready for his school transition, and that all needed supports are in place?

Step 3: Save and submit your Video Analysis Paper.
When you have completed the assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to your instructor using the link provided in each lesson dropbox. A copy of the Video Analysis Paper Scoring Grid must be sent with your assignment in order to receive feedback. The instructor will comment and provide your score via the Gradebook area.
