What we consider edible, the foods we love and the foods we hate, the associations we make with it and the values we draw from it, are at the same time deeply personal and thoroughly imbedded in our culture. In this paper you will explore some of the fundamental connections between food and culture by selecting as a topic a particular food or meal that, for you, has had a significant cultural impact on one or more regions, or that is seen as representative of a particular culture or community. In your discussion, you are encouraged to draw on your disciplinary training to develop a more nuanced and academic argument. For example a historian might incorporate the historical background of a particular foodstuff, an anthropologist might discuss food’s social function, while someone else might examine how gender roles are defined through our relationship to food and food preparation. Write a paper that explores the connection between food and locale.
