We are going to take a New Historical approach to three of Poe’s short stories about the sea. I want you to print, annotate, and actively read the stories linked below (they are long, so give yourself time). Do some digging about the context. Think about what it would be like to set yourself adrift at that moment in time. What were the technological conditions (also consider health)? What were the social factors that motivated these trips or created difficult situations for travelers (think about language)? What were the economic conditions that sent people into the unknown?
