Ryan is 3 years old and attends the workplace nursery attached to his mother’s job at a shopping centre. He is usually there from 8.30am until 6.00pm from Monday to Friday. If his mother has to work on Saturday, then he attends the shopping centre crèche.

Recently Ryan has started biting and being aggressive to other children if they have something he wants. He wants to play with toys alone and does not want to share. He pushes away nursery workers who try to comfort him.

Ryan’s mother works in a shop at the large shopping centre. She is a single parent and Ryan is an only child. He has no contact with his father, and other members of the wider family live a long way from his home as Ryan’s mother moved to find work.

Ryan’s mother is very worried because yesterday he bit and scratched another child whose father is a shop manager. This child’s father has approached the officer in charge of the nursery, demanding that action be taken. He has implied that if the matter is not resolved then Ryan should be asked to leave the nursery.
