Background: The flow of water within a channel is not uniform. The speed or ‘velocity’ of the water decreases towards the bed of the channel and channel walls because of increasing frictional resistance. In sinuous rivers the zone of maximum velocity swings towards the outside of each bend, becoming closer to the bank as the radius of the curvature of the channel decreases. Erosion occurs on the outer bend, as the water is travelling fastest at this point and so has energy to erode and undercut the banks, while on the inner bend deposition occurs as the water slows down and no longer has the energy to carry its sediment load.

 

Assignment Task: You are required to produce a technical poster (A3-size) that appraises both the engineering and environmental benefits and barriers of different river bank protection techniques (quoting case studies and using available products as examples) utilized to minimize river bank erosion.

 

You must hand in: an A3-size hard-copy of the poster AND also an electronic version of the poster on CD/memory stick (not via email).

 

** Examples: 1. Natural bank protection methods include grass – turf, grass – reinforced with synthetic materials, reeds, willows and other trees, timber work, brushwood; 2. Vertical bank protection methods include steel sheet piling, steel trench sheeting, gabion structures, concrete, brick and masonry gravity walls, precast units, reinforced earth structures; 3. Stone (rip-rap, pitching, masonry, gabion mattresses, forms of grouting), concrete (blocks, in-situ slabs, fabric mattresses), geotextiles and geomembranes (grassed composites, mats and grids, two-dimensional fabrics), open or dense stone asphalt [taken from CIRIA publication by Hemphill & Bramley].

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Note: The completed assignment accounts for 50% of the final component grade (Portfolio), and must be attempted.
