The research paper offers several topics that focus on artists and themes not directly addressed in class, to supplement the course?s emphasis on the major masters Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck and Vermeer; as well as topics on thematic groups of Rembrandt?s etchings on special exhibit. For the first group of topics, there are several paintings on display at the Museum of Fine Arts — located in the large Dutch Gallery where we concluded our last visit (plan 242) and in the immediately adjacent corridor and smaller gallery (plan 243, 244) — that provide the visual anchorage for your analysis of the development of different genres in Dutch painting contemporary with Rembrandt. For the Rembrandt topics, the etchings are on display in gallery immediately to the left of the Fenway entrance (plan 144).
Bibliographic sources and citations:
Several books have been placed on reserve as a starting point for your research in each topic, as well as a few general reference books. These are placed on open reserve self in the library on Farber level 3, to the right, on top of the short shelves that hold the Creative Arts Reference books. The books are labeled as reserve and are non-circulating. Please use these only on Farber 3, and replace them on the shelf after you are finished, otherwise the books will disappear for a few days it finds its way up to circulation and back.
The final paper must include a bibliography of at least 10 sources, inclusive of the pertinent ones listed here, which you shall reference with endnotes or footnotes (not parenthetically). Remember that individually authored chapters within books should be cited and referenced separately. For catalogue entries, cite the author of the entry and page references in the note, but refer to the general catalogue author, title (footnote example: entry author name, in catalogue editor/author name, Title or date, p. #). For additional sources, consult the bibliographies of the texts on reserve, JSTOR and the Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) ? for the latter two, consult the alphabetical databases link on the LTS website:

*Briefly introduce each of these masters and examine their relationship with Rembrandt. How do the MFA paintings relate to typical works by each artist? Describe how they exemplify each master?s response to Rembrandt?s example both in terms of style and in approach to pictorial narrative, citing examples of his work as points of comparison.
