Each student will select a NURSING care issue related to the focus of the clinical unit. All work is to be done independently for this assignment. Correct APA format (6th ed.) and professional writing are expected.
Instructions for PAPER (points are listed on the Rubric):
1. Select a topic from the list provided or you may suggest a different topic. Email clinical instructor with your selection of topic by Monday of Week 2 by 12:45p. Topic will be confirmed by reply email.
2. Search the library databases and resources for current evidence (preferably systematic reviews and meta-analyses no older than 2008) and clinical guidelines. Meet or email clinical instructor your quality resources to be approved by Thursday of Week 2 at 12:45p.
3. Submit a well-developed high quality Nursing paper electronically to clinical instructor Thursday of Week 5 by 12:45p. EBP Paper Submission submitted after this time will incur a 10% deduction for each day late after the stated date/time.
Students must also submit the paper to Turnitin, each clinical instructor will provide their clinical group with a class number and password to access Turnitin.
Students must use Grammarly to appropriately review grammar within the students? papers. Students must attach the printout from Grammarly?, after reviewing the results and making corrections.

Body/text of the paper needs to be a full 5-8 pages in Times New Roman font size 12 discussing the following areas:
Introduction -a thorough presentation of the topic and description of its relevance to nursing. Statistics about prevalence of the problem are appropriate here and must be cited correctly. The last statement of the introduction should include concepts to be discussed in the paper.
Integration of the Evidence ? this section should identify concepts as organizers to discuss the evidence in each paragraph. For example, a person writing about NPO status in the pre-op period might consider the concepts of hunger, fluid volume deficit, and risk for aspiration. These concepts should be discussed in separate paragraphs, supported by results (evidence) form multiple resources/authors related to each concept. This format allows you to more fully demonstrate critical thinking ability and use the ideas and evidence of multiple authors in a single paragraph about a single concept. This will demonstrate integration and analysis that is not evident in an article summary. Do NOT include areas such as sample size or location unless it affects the results and causes limited generalization (if so, statement included as to why this article is included). For example, a study performed with only 15 clients in N. Korea might have limited application (generalizability) to your clinical unit. Either omit this study or justify its use based on author statements.
Best Practices ? gleaned from the evidence based literature (research articles or clinical guidelines). These are specific nursing recommendations from those resources related to practice concerning the concepts identified in the Integration of Evidence section.
Conclusion ? a summary of evidence and best practices with statements to connect ideas into a coherent whole.
Reference Page ? includes the BEST and at least 4 current (2008-present) evidence-based professional journal articles and clinical guidelines. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are required to be used.

APA Format and Professional Writing
Plagiarism

? Presenting the words or ideas of another person as your own
? Intentional: purposeful use
? Accidental: copying from your preparation notes/article and forgetting to use proper citation and/or quotation marks
? Both intentional and accidental plagiarisms are serious issues and will be dealt with according to policy.
? Self-plagiarism: students are required to submit original work for all courses. Papers

Quoting
? Use quotation marks around the words copied.

Paraphrasing

Secondary Sources
? If the author makes a statement in the article/text but cites yet another author, this is a secondary source. Do not include secondary source materials in your paper unless you cite them as APA format mandates (p. 178). This is a very important issue and one that causes problems for many students. Be sure you understand this process and cite accordingly. List the original author followed by the reference to the paper you read as in the example below:
Jones (as cited in Smith, 2009) reported…
This indicates that you read the article by Smith, but are giving credit to Jones as the owner of the ideas (as did Smith).
NOTE: Do NOT quote with secondary source citations. Paraphrase only.
Professionalism in Writing
? Professional writing includes proper written English grammar, punctuation, spelling (including apostrophe use), sentence structure, and paragraphing.
? Casual terms (e.g., really, big, pretty, hard, a lot, like, huge, contractions, and many others including slang terms) are not appropriate in professional writing.
? Do not pose questions in your writing. Instead, make statements.
? Do NOT evaluate each article or source separately. Students are to present and discuss concepts related to the general paper topic using supporting information from each of the articles as appropriate. Article summaries are NOTacceptable, 15 pts will be immediately deducted from the Integration of Evidence section if you do an Article summary.
? Substantial depth and development of concepts is required, rather than a surface coverage of the topic.
? Dictionary definitions are not appropriate for a scholarly paper. If you wish to define an unfamiliar concept, please use professional nursing literature as your sources.
? Person:
Use the nurse to describe the nursing professional delivering care.
Use THIRD PERSON pronouns (he/she, they) when appropriate. Make sure it is clear which person is referred to by each pronoun. Is he the nurse or the patient?
When writing about authors, use last names or the authors. Articles do not state, authors report or note. Use past tense for verbs in this area, as the authors are not stating today (article was written in the past).
Incorrect: The article by Johnson (2007) states?..
Correct: Johnson (2007) noted (reported)?.
In addition, do not use: Research shows, Evidence shows, or Other studies show?. These are vague terms not worthy of a scholarly paper. Attribute evidence and conclusions to specific authors.
