Critical Assessment of a Scientific Journal Article
Guideline Notes
This exercise assesses your ability at the postgraduate level to read a scientific article, understand it and objectively criticize it from a scientific point of view.
We devoted a class seminar/lecture to this topic this semester. You may also have had some practice in your specialty seminar/literature review.
You cannot do the exercise in a hurry or rush. You need to choose your article carefully and read it totally before you start to answer the questions.
The exercise carries 20% of the final grade, and you can get anywhere from poor to excellent grade depending on how satisfactorily you handle the exercise.

HOW and WHAT ARE YOU TO DO?
1. Select a full-length article from from one of the articles you selected in Assignment #1 which you are expected to submit by Nov 11 2015 If you select from outside those 4 Journals, your paper will NOT be graded.
2. Write your Critical Assessment (also called CRITIQUE) by following these steps.
A) State the Title of the Paper & Name(s) of the Authors. (DO NOT include addresses of the authors).
b) State whether the article is an Original Article, a Systematic Review, a Critical Review or a Meta-analysis?
C) Did the author(s) state a Hypothesis or raise a Guiding question or make an ordinary statement about the Research Topic. Identify the Hypothesis or question asked or statement made either in the Introduction or Materials/Method section of the article (paper).
d) The critique that criticizes the Literature Review part? Is the information her relevant to the Title of the Article, Is it too little Or too much in scope? Any other criticism you may wish to make
e) What were the Materials and Methods? Describe these as stated by the authors. This part is very important in any scientific article
f) Explain how Results were presented.
G) What is your opinion about the Discussion/Conclusions/Recommendations (if any)?
H) In a separate paragraph, explain well why you “enjoy” or “do not enjoy the Article
