As a promising engineering student, an oil company consults you with a design and analysis task that will be paid for on completion. The company wants you to design a rectangular tank which will function as a reservoir. They provided the following details:
i. The tank has dimension of Length, Width and Height of 10 m x 10 m x 7 m, respectively.
ii. The tank will contain water to a height of 5 m and oil of relative density 0.85 will float on top of the water to a height of 2 m.
(1) You are required to write a report with detailed calculations to address the followings:
(a) The engineering drawing for the tank.
(b) The magnitude of the total/resultant force on one of the vertical faces of the tank.
(c) The position of this total force.
The clients also informed you of their intention to transport the floating oil to another depot using a horizontal pipeline with a bend. They anticipated conditions and provided you with the following information:
iii. At the bend, the pipe gradually tapers from a diameter of 300 mm at inlet to a diameter of 150 mm at outlet and turns the flow through an angle of 60 ┬║.
iv. The pressure at inlet and outlet are 45 kN/m2 and 25 kN/m2, respectively.
v. They propose to transport the oil at 0.45 m3/s.
(2) In your report with detailed calculations, the company wants you to address the followings:
(d) The magnitude of the resultant force on the bend.
(e) The direction of the resultant force on the bend.
The company is also interested in a section of the flow where they intend to supply power using a pump. They provided you with the following information:
vi. The density of the oil at this section is 925 kg/m3
vii. The flow rate is 0.012 m3/s.
viii. The absolute viscosity of the oil is 0.065 Ns/m2.
ix. The diameter of the pipe is 120 mm.
(3) In your report with detailed calculations, the company wants you to address the followings:
(f) The head loss in each kilometer of pipeline.
(g) The shear stress at the pipe wall.
(h) The magnitude of power supplied by the pump per kilometer of the pipeline.
