international business history

To the firms on the list add Consolidated Gold, Burmah Oil, and Anglo Persian (BP)). You’ll need to select a firm that is big enough that it has created a visible documentary past, and hence it is best not to select a very small firm (by market capitalization).

Overall you’re assessing the nature of free-standing company business c.1915. To achieve this you need to provide the reader with a sense of what the company is, why it exists, who formed it, whether it is linked to other similar businesses, whether it was short-lived, whether it was indicative of firms in this type of business, or operating in that specific location. Overall this enables you to assess whether Mira Wilkins’ views on FSC are robust.

4) The time frame of the study may be the total length of the existence of the firm, or just a section. This will be entirely dependent upon the firm chosen, and indeed part of the assignment is determining what boundaries to place on your study. Equally all studies will be slightly different anyway, because different firms raise specific questions to be followed.

5) You’re going to need some secondary literature to help ensure that you’ve got the general narrative and context right, but this is not an assignment to be crammed full of secondary material.

6) There is no set number of references that I’m looking for.

7) Apply whatever skills and knowledge that you have from other modules if you think that it will help you in assessing your firm.

8) My recommendation is that you start your search not with Google, but by building up an initial picture from The Times newspaper. We have the full text archive, and there is a document on this ELE site with the links, but it’s all off the Electronic Library, under newspapers. We also have the full archive of the Financial Times and the Economist.

9) Use Google! (or any other search engine). In some instances you’ll find materials, but in others it is quite possible that you’ll not really find anything.

10) search Google Scholar, and Google Books.

11) Conduct general academic literature searches for materials on your firm, or sector in that location. Check to see if it is covered in the Jones textbook.

12) After The Times, there are then a wealth of other resources. My suggestion is that if you’re lucky you’ll get a copy of the initial company prospectus in The Times. This then gives you other names to search for, and names to look up in the Oxford New Dictionary of National Biography (again an electronic resource). A variety of electronic sources are described in the sheet on ELE, but it is past newspapers that are likely to be your primary source.

13) Use tables if appropriate.

14) Use figures / pictures if appropriate.
