Write a 1,000-word (minimum) essay addressing one of the topics described below. You must meet the minimum word count to get full credit.

Choose ONE of the following and write a formal 1,000-word essay:

1. Consider the film you watched for week 1 (Cinema Paradiso, City of God, A Hijacking, The Bicycle Thief, or A Passage to India). Explore the political and/or social issues that affect the story. How do these issues affect the characters?

2. Review the definition of “canon” from the Week 1 “Getting Ready to Study Literature” lecture. With this definition in mind, write an essay dealing with three works we have read (from Weeks 1, 2, or 3) and argue why they should be part of this canon. Be sure to focus on how each work is worthy of admiration and study and how it embodies the cultural values of a society.

3. Review the definition of “characterization” from the Week 2 lectures. With this definition in mind, write an essay that performs an analysis of characterization for three protagonists. (One from three separate texts from Weeks 1, 2, and 3).
