Heian Period

| November 16, 2015

Imagine that you are a Chinese Confucian historian who found his way to Japan and managed to observe the private and public worlds of the Shinning Prince. Write a history of the world of the Shinning Prince seen from the eyes of this Chinese man. This history, modeled after the style of the early Chinese record on Japan, should include both descriptions, drawn primarily from you readings and the lectures, and personal reactions and moral commentary. As a “Chinese Confucian scholar,” what customs and practices in Heian Japan do you approve of? What do you find repulsive? Your history should focus on (but not limited to) one of the following elements: political situation; religious life (Shinto and Buddhism), importance of the family; impact of Confucian learning; women as cultural creators; relationship between aristocrats and commoners; interaction between aristocratic men and women.
