Write a 1,500 word essay on the following:
Critically evaluate social model(s) of disability presented by key disability studies theorists. Which model do you consider most useful for contemporary disability activism?
This assignment carries 30% of the overall mark for the module.
1. This is a developmental assignment, designed to assess your grasp of core concepts and issues studied in the first part of the unit with which you need to become familiar to tackle the final assignment effectively.
2. The Social Model of Disability was a term coined by Michael Oliver, a former member of the Union of the Physically Impaired Against Segregation in the 1970s. In this essay you are encouraged to consider the historical development of disability activism.
3. Consider the key issues for disabled people in different generational eras.
4. Consider the landmarks in policy development – what factors account for changes in policy?
5. Identify key disability theorists in the Disabled People’s Movement. Provide an outline of their ideas. What are the strengths and weaknesses of their argument?
6. In what ways does the historical treatment of disabled people underpin how they are conceptualized and treated contemporary society? What examples in history do different Disability Studies theorists draw on?
7. Identity the causal factors linked with the oppression of disabled people from a number of key disability studies thinkers.
8. By the third part of the essay you will have set out the information and ideas you need to undertake a critical appraisal of the essay question. Hone in on the question of whether historical influences, such as ideas about people being dependent and needing care or control, or practices such as segregation, still affect people who use social care today. Reach a considered and balanced conclusion based on the evidence you have presented in the essay as a whole about what this means for adult social care policy and practice today. There is no right or wrong answer, your work will be graded on the basis of how well you argue and support your case.
9. Use the Harvard system of referencing to identify the source of all the information used in your assignment (see guidance in this handbook).
10. Your work must be word processed, double spaced and page numbered; Arial 12 Font; and must also include a word count.
