What has led to increased Gun sales?

Various issues have resulted in a rise in gun sales in America. Among them are terrorism, politics and increased calls for gun control. According to statistics, gun sales have risen in the last decade from 7 million to about 15 million a majority of them being handguns bought for self-defense.

There have been increased gun sales since 9/11 terrorist attack. In the recent times after the attacks in San Bernardino, California and when a man shot and killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Politics come into play when there was numerous intervention from President Obama on the proposals to have restrictions on the gun. There was a spike in sales after the president made his speech five days later and unfortunately, his calls have been leading to more sales because people who may not have wanted a rifle to consider buying it now before a restriction is put in place. In 2013, there was also a rise in gun sales in New Jersey, after the governor proposed expanding background checks on people buying guns. Maryland experienced the same when there was extreme gun control measure were put in place on semi-automatic rifles buyers were buying to beat the October deadline. Therefore, it seems that pushing for gun controls can lead to an influx of new gun purchases.

However, calls for restrictions should not end. The American society has suffered unwarranted deaths because of the carelessness of gun owners and guns finding their way to people who are not of stable minds capable of placing the right judgment on situations. The president’s anger is, therefore, justified and as citizens, we should continue in the fight against terrorism from within and outside because that makes us all at risk.
