We’ve been spending the last couple of weeks talking about arguments and debating controversial social and political issues. Now it’s time to pick an issue, take a position and construct an argument supporting that position. The choice is yours. You can use one of the issues we have debated in class or you can choose an entirely new one. What you’re looking for is an issue that reasonable people can disagree about. I would urge you to avoid so-called wedge issues, like abortion, gay rights and gun control, because most people have made their minds up about this and aren’t likely to change based on any argument you make.
As we’ve discussed in class, a good argument is built on logic and evidence. For this paper, I would like you to bring in at least three outside sources. You can use articles from the popular media (newspapers, magazines, reputable websites), but I would also urge you to do some looking in the MSU library indexes and databases for more credible sources. And your sources are to be cited, both in the text of your paper and on a Works Cited page, according to MLA style guidelines.
The paper is to be 1,200-1,400 words in length with a header that includes your name, the class, the assignment and the date in the upper left-hand corner of the first page only and page numbers in the upper right-hand corners of every page.
