Have you ever experienced benevolent sexism? Have you ever experienced hostile sexism? If so, try to analyze the experience. How did it make you feel? Does benevolent sexism feel the same as hostile sexism? If you haven’t experienced either of these personally, discuss what you think motivates benevolent and/or hostile sexism. Can someone be guilty of benevolent or hostile sexism even if they aren’t trying to be sexist? Even if they are trying to be nice?

Microaggressions are small-scale interactions “done with little conscious awareness of their meanings and effects,” but which, over time, accumulate to define a marginalized experience. Thinking about the Microaggressions website, Peggy McIntosh’s concept of the “invisible knapsack” of white privilege, male privilege, Heterosexual privilege, Implicit Associations, and/or the film “A Girl Like Me,” explain why microaggressions matter even if they are unintended. Have you ever experienced microagressions? Have you ever been unintentionally microaggressive towards someone else? Please respond in a minimum of 350 words, referring to specific details from the readings, the activities, and/or the short film, “A Girl Like Me.”
