Explain, in your own words, Beatty?s argument for the claim that there are no scientific laws in biology, and how that leads to ?relative significance? debates in biology. Is the debate over neo-Darwinism/neo-Larmarckism an example of such a debate?

Your final exam should be 3 pages maximum. You will be answering three question. 1 page per question. (word processed, 12 point font, double spaced,
1 inch margins)
Some general advice:
Explain yourself as clearly and thoroughly as you can within the space constraints of the exam
(devote approximately one page to each question, so that the exam as a whole is 3 pages
maximum).
Write the exam as though the reader were someone who knew nothing about the topic; your goal
is to demonstrate your knowledge of the course material. Explain key terms. All answers must
be in your own words ? that is, not copied out of your notes and not copied from the readings.
Do not use an introduction and conclusion. Only discuss issues that the questions ask about
(nothing extra), but be sure to discuss everything that the questions ask about (don?t skip
parts).
Be sure to describe the views of, and reference, specific authors in your answers.
Grading:
In general, I am looking for the following:
1. How clearly you express yourself. Are the individual sentences understandable? Is
the paper well-structured?
2. How completely you address the issue. Do you do all parts of the assignment? Do
you consider all the relevant aspects in your answer? Do you go beyond our class
discussions?
3. How persuasive you are in making your points. Do you provide good reasons and
examples to back up the points you are making? Do you defend your position well
against possible objections or counter-arguments?
Answer all three questions. NUMBER your answers correctly.
1. For the following two concepts: natural selection, and fitness.
For each of the two concepts you have picked, first explain one author?s
definitions of the concept and then explain one of his/her/their reasons for defending that
definition.
2. Give reasons for why someone might think that that there are multiple defensible meanings
of two out of the three following terms: ?species,? ?race,? and ?community.?
3. Explain, in your own words, Beatty?s argument for the claim that there are no scientific laws in biology, and how that leads to ?relative significance? debates in biology. Is the debate over neo-Darwinism/neo-Larmarckism an example of such a debate? Explain your answer.
