Understanding the Nature and Forms of Cyber Bullying

| May 19, 2014

In a rapidly advancing IT society, the issue of cyber bullying and the manner it is exacerbated at all levels, raises fundamental questions. The question is whether it is a transition of bullying in general from its traditional forms to a more complex and technologically advanced form, or it is a new form of cultural adaptation that is mounting with the progression of digital technology (Keith and Martin 224). The nature of cyber bullying is typically analogous to bullying in its connotative sense, only that, the act occurs through a different medium that poses intricacies to identify the perpetrators (Anderson 18). Conversely, the nature of bullying is rooted in the behavior of a person, and the cyber or internet only acts as a medium through which an individual’s bullying disposition is exhibited. The kind of bullying that is in schools or workplaces is easily noticeable, and perpetrators can easily be caught and punished. However, digital technology has somehow complicated the entire practice and enabled perpetrators to get away with their acts. Since many people today have been empowered with the use of electronic devices even without positive purposes, supervision or any kind of instructions, major consequences have proliferated which threaten to tarnish the intended function of internet technology (Anderson 19).
