This assignment covers Learning Outcomes 1 and 2, and requires you to write a 2500 word original essay using ONE of the following questions:

Please note that you may NOT use organisational examples discussed in the lectures and seminars as the main references for your answer. Each answer must be supported by relevant academic theory.

1. As tales of labour abuse in developing countries by multinational companies have made the headlines in developed countries, some of these companies have adopted voluntary corporate social responsibility codes. Does this constitute using CSR as another form of PR? Discuss with supporting evidence based on research, case studies, and academic theories and/or models. 

2. Attitudes to ethical standards and to what constitutes corruption vary from culture to culture. Examine how these attitudes affect the business practice for your chosen organisation / industry sector / geographical area. How would you minimise the negative effects of these attitudes? Use academic sources and relevant case studies, theories and/or models to support your discussion.

3. The United Nations’ Global Compact identified four main areas of ethical concern in relation to business: ecological environment, corruption, labour standards (including child labour)  and human rights. Discuss two of these in relation to your chosen organisation/industry sector. Conduct research and use academic sources as well as relevant case studies, theories and/or models to support your discussion

4. One socio-economic definition of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is “a business firm’s obligation beyond that required by law and economics, to pursue long-term goals that are good for society” (Robbins et al, 2006:96). Outline Milton Friedman’s classical view of CSR which we have discussed in class. Argue either “for” or “against” his classical view of CSR. Justify your argument with relevant examples, theories and models.
