Order Details;

You must choose at least one Chinese business group that has a listed subsidiary to analyse. Each student must have their own business group. Banks and other financial organisations are excluded. Further, you may not choose one of the groups often discussed in class such as Lenovo, Geely, TCL or Haier. You may choose more than one group for comparative purposes.

Please check to ensure that the companies chosen: 1. are from mainland China, (not Hong Kong or Taiwan), 2. are business groups, 3. engage in outward foreign direct investments.

This essay is divided into 3 parts, the first part is literature review, thesis and research question development. However, you are only required to do the second and third parts which are Data, Research Question Findings and Analysis and Discussion and Implications, as I have already done the first part. SO NO INTRODUCTION IS NEEDED!

**I have chosen a Hong Kong business group for the first part so I have been asked to choose a mainland group for the rest of the essays. You’ll do this for me 🙂

Guides for part 2 and 3

Data, Research Question Findings and Analysis. (1000 words)
This part will introduce the data sources and explain how they were used to generate answers to the research questions. Specific findings for each research question, as well relating the findings to the overall thesis are the core of the paper. This entails analysing findings and drawing potential significance for both specific questions and overall results.

Discussion and Implications. (500 words)
The final part builds on the findings and analysis to present a systematic argument in response to the thesis and questions developed in the previous two parts. Besides summarising the findings and discussing significance, the paper should draw implications of what the findings mean either in terms of refining the questions and thesis for future research or in terms of significance for businesses, policymakers, academics or other stakeholders.

Notes for the question
You will need to read the numerous general articles in the reading list that directly address the questions above. Make sure you also look at differences between state-owned and private overseas expansion to understand the stakes and goals and why differences are interesting. A survey of more recent research on topic of internationalisation and different explanations could complement this before proceeding to examples.
To make your essay answer more original you are encouraged to try and understand some of these Chinese companies in more detail and to test some of the ideas currently being put forward in the academic literature.
You are encouraged to use company reports/web sites and news media to try and compare what you observe with some of the theories put forward for why firms internationalise (i.e. resource seeking etc.). One suggestion is to pick one or two of the companies from the Hong Kong or U.S. stock market for your case studies, in particular privately owned and capital constrained ones, since they are thus different to SOEs, which makes them interesting.
The annual reports of U.S.-listed companies are known as 20-F forms, available from SEC website. Firm prospectuses also offer rare insights into these private businesses. These are also available online. Please use most recent 20-F forms. The Hong Kong exchange (HKEx) also provides pdf files that can be downloaded.
For China-listed companies, annual reports are available from company websites, disclosure and media websites.
