American Revolution

| February 25, 2015

Colin Calloway wrote, “Historians have long recognized the significance of 1763 in setting America on a course to revolution a dozen years later, but they have often neglected actors and scenes that did not contribute directly to this central plot.” 1 Compare Calloway’s quotation with that of Eric Foner, who on the subject of the Great Awakening, wrote, “Although the revivalists’ aim was spiritual salvation, the independent frame of mind they encouraged would have significant political consequences.” 2 Where does the American Revolution come from? Should one consider solely the events post-1763, consider events before 1763 like the Great Awakening and the Zenger Trial, or should one focus on events before and after 1763 in explaining the coming of the American Revolution?
