Article 2

I believe that both formal and informal communication are important in work environment. Formal communications refer to daily status meeting, PI planning, retrospective meetings, one-one meetings, emails. They are considered official. It usually follows a structure and a channel. Whereas informal communications flow freely. Usually, formal meetings must maintain secrets but in informal meetings it is difficult to maintain secrets. Informal meetings are usually the root cause of gossips at work. Based on the experience I could also say that formal meetings are long and time consuming, informal meetings are quick and easy. Formal communication follows a structure and that structure would be defined by the company whereas, informal ones take its own routes and follow its own patterns. However, I would also say that both formal and informal meetings depend highly on the participants.

Let’s dive deep into the types of formal and informal communication.

Formal communication has Vertical, Horizontal and Crosswise types. Vertical type is usually between organizations and has hierarchy. Horizontal/Lateralis between people from different departments in an organization. Crosswise/Diagonal is between employees of different levels from different departments.

Informal communication has Single strand chain, cluster chain and gossip chain. Single strand as the name suggests is a type of communication from one person to another and so on like a thread. Cluster chain is the type of communication we see when a trend goes viral in social media. This starts with one person or a group and they tag a bunch of people to carry it through and that bunch would tag some other cluster of people. That is why the name. Gossip chain as we all know is initiated by a person to another person or a group and the group would carry that information to other group.
